Still a few waves about

Hello Friends,

As expected, the energy levels have slipped down another notch this morning for Sydneysiders. However, it’s not quite flat at places that can do something with the metre or so of SE windswell currently lapping in.

Average period is about 8 seconds, but the MHL buoy is still showing some longer period stuff. That may account for the chest high sets I saw coming into Dee Why when I checked it around 0645. There were a few folks in the water, but you couldn’t describe it as crowded and I’m reasonably confident that it isn’t the only place in Sydney with something rideable. I don’t want to exaggerate its virtues, but gutless as this little windswell is, it was amusing to play with it yesterday morning and I reckon the same applies to today.

It’s going to be a steamy one today in Sydney, but a south change is due through tonight. Tomorrow will be cooler and windy from the SE (20-30 kts) in the morning.  Unless that long period stuff hangs around, I’d say the Friday outlook is not spectacularly wonderful for Sydney.

Overall it looks as though we’re going to have smallish short period windswell into the weekend. The good news is that the models are showing some interesting developments south of Fiji and north of NZ toward the middle of next week. Could possibly look more exciting by the time we get to Wednesday. As usual, we will see what we see.

Go well with your day!

Hello Friends,

Interesting. According to the MHL buoy off Sydney, the dominant swell direction has gone from close to east around to near south. At the same time the period has increased slightly and is averaging 10 sec. Height at sea is on the 2 metre mark. When you put that all together, you get some fun looking chest to shoulder high plus sets rolling into Dee Why.

Skies are starting out grey and murky again, but it should burn off and be a toasty 29 along the coast this afternoon. The wind forecast is a standard-issue summery 15-20 kts of NE’r.

Looking ahead, it would seem that this could be the last of the swell for the next week or so. All the models are pointing toward a period of smallness, but with luck, not utter flatness.

Have yourself a top old day and go well with your plans!

grey to start, but energy around

few little things on offer at DY

Hello Friends,

The Monday holiday starts out foggy and windy in Sydney. The southerly is around the 20 kt mark as I write this, but the Bureau says we can expect it to  moderate and then back around to the E-NE this afternoon. Interestingly, we still have a little wave energy around. The dominant component is out of the east by ene at about 9 seconds and is averaging around 1.5 metres. However, there continues to be a little something in the 12 sec range being worked into the mix.

At Dee Why this morning, everyone was pushed down into the corner by the southerly, but as the pictures I posted show, there were a few into the chest high plus range. Fair number of people in the water, but it seemed reasonably consistent.

Outlook for the week ahead is for a gradual decline, but not a fall to utter flatness. Today looks about the best prospect until mid-weekend when we might get a bit of ENE windswell worthy of the name. Thursday currently looks to be the least interesting day for Sydneysiders. Could be pretty close to flat.

Just about it for the summer hols… make the most of the day!
